One number, 0 to 100. It blends independent critic ratings, community sentiment, how widely the bottle is discussed, and how consistent it has stayed across bottlings. This one lands in the RECOMMENDED band. The critic average below is just one of those ingredients, not the headline.

Kilkerran 12 is the flagship of Glengyle, the small Campbeltown distillery owned by the same family as Springbank (Glengyle was revived in 2004; 'Kilkerran' is the brand name to avoid a trademark clash). Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, natural colour, matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry. It shares the Campbeltown DNA, salty maritime, light peat, a faint oily texture, but it's its own thing: more bourbon-led vanilla and citrus than Springbank's sherry weight, with a clean light smoke and a soft oak. It's well-regarded by the same crowd that loves Springbank, and it's a touch easier to find (though still allocated at many shops). For £45 to £65 it's a distinctive, well-bottled Campbeltown malt. Buy this if you want a Campbeltown malt and can find it at a fair price; it's a touch more available than Springbank. Skip it if you specifically want the sherry-and-funk Springbank profile. The right price is £45-60. Above £80 you're paying a hype premium.

TASTING NOTESDRAMFINDER EDITORIAL
Nose
Salty maritime air, light peat smoke, vanilla, citrus, a faint oily texture, a soft oak. Campbeltown DNA, more bourbon-led than Springbank.
Palate
Salt and a light smoke at the front, then vanilla, citrus, a faint oiliness, an oak grip. 46% and non-chill-filtration give it texture; cleaner and more bourbon-led than Springbank.
Finish
Medium to long. Salt, light smoke, vanilla, and a soft oak fade together. Clean and distinctive.

WHAT REVIEWERS SAYINDEPENDENT REVIEWS
"Dominantly bourbon. I agree we should have tried this one earlier. Colour: light gold. Nose: the casks feel a little bit, with a little turmeric and nutmeg over butter and mashed potatoes. Some green pepper, cider apples, very dry brioche dough… I am not immediately convinced. Whiffs of hand cream and leather polish. Mouth: less in the shadow of Springbank on the palate than it was on the nose (IMHO) but this lemony, buttery curry remains a tad bizarre. Some sour wood, peppered lemon marmalade, ras-el-hanout, allspice, more butter… It does remain oak-forward all along."
2021 BOTTLING
"That's right, the first 'regular' expression of Glengyle/Kilkerran, after the various 'WIPs' that have almost all been very convincing. Although I preferred the bourbon versions, but that's a matter of taste. Love the no-fuss label by the way. Colour: straw. Nose: pristine lemony/chalky/sooty start, then rather broken branches and a touch of liquorice wood, as well as hints of bandages and tiger balm. Perhaps barbecued herbs, perhaps thyme and rosemary? I can't seem to find anything bad to say about this nose."strong showing

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU BUY THISLIFTING THE VEIL
WHY IT’S BOUGHT
  • plusThe Campbeltown character at a (slightly) more available price than Springbank.
  • plus46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, natural colour. Real bottling integrity.
  • plusIts own thing, more bourbon-led vanilla and citrus than Springbank's sherry weight.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • caveatStill allocated at many shops; not always easy to find at the official price.
  • caveatLess complex than an aged Springbank; it's a 12-year-old, and a young distillery's one at that (Glengyle revived 2004).
  • caveatThe Campbeltown hype premium can push the price up.
BEHIND THE LABEL
  • flagGlengyle/Kilkerran benefits from the Springbank halo, same family, same town, same hands-off ethos, and the marketing leans on that association.
  • flagLike Springbank, it's caught in the Campbeltown-hype flipper economy, with allocations and queues at the popular shops.
