One number, 0 to 100. It blends independent critic ratings, community sentiment, how widely the bottle is discussed, and how consistent it has stayed across bottlings. This one lands in the QUALIFIED band. The critic average below is just one of those ingredients, not the headline.

Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength is the standard 10-year-old bottled at cask strength, typically 56 to 58% ABV depending on the batch (the batch number is on the box, in the format 'Batch 0XX'). It is the answer to the standard 10's main flaw: that bottle's 40% ABV is too low for the intensity. At cask strength the medicinal Laphroaig DNA (iodine, tar, band-aid, leather) hits with the weight it deserves, plus a bigger oak-and-vanilla backbone from the higher proof. It is, by community consensus, the better Laphroaig 10, full stop.

It is fierce neat and rewards water, which opens it into a rich, smoky, medicinal dram. Each batch varies, which obsessives track and casual buyers can ignore. At £55 to £70 it costs more than the standard 10 or the Quarter Cask, but it is the most complete expression of the core Laphroaig style.

Buy this if you already love Laphroaig 10 and want it at full strength. Skip it if you're new to Laphroaig (start with the standard 10 to know whether you like the medicinal style) or if you find cask-strength whisky overwhelming. The right price is £55 to £70. Add water.

TASTING NOTESDRAMFINDER EDITORIAL
Nose
Iodine, tar, peat smoke, brine, then a bigger vanilla-and-oak backbone from the high proof. Fierce neat; opens richly with water.
Palate
Big medicinal hit at the front, peat smoke and salt, then a vanilla-and-oak sweetness develops, a warming heat from the 56 to 58%. With water it rounds into a rich, smoky, medicinal richness with more depth than the standard 10.
Finish
Long. Iodine, peat, salt, and a warming heat hold, fading to vanilla and oak. Longer and fuller than the standard 10's finish.

Food: smoked salmon, blue cheese, oysters with horseradish, dark chocolate. Cigar: a full Maduro. Setting: a stormy night, or to demonstrate what Laphroaig is capable of.
WHAT REVIEWERS SAYINDEPENDENT REVIEWS
": rating by Serge 92/100 . A perfect balance strength / aromas. We find again the beautiful salinity of the Laphroaig that was already there with the Laphroaig 30 but this time with more body and length. Conversely the salinity of the whisky amplifies the creaminess of the cigar. This pairing forms a harmonious whole. Pairing 5/5 Laphroaig 1974 31yo (49.7%, OB for LMDW, sherry, 910 bts): rating by Serge 95/100 . A legendary Laphroaig, sherry cask, which is pretty rare, the distillery usually favours the use of Bourbon casks."

WHY IT’S BOUGHT
  • plusFixes the standard 10's main flaw. The medicinal Laphroaig DNA at the weight it deserves.
  • plusBigger oak-and-vanilla backbone from the higher proof. More depth than the 40% 10.
  • plusBy community consensus, the better Laphroaig 10. The most complete expression of the core style.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • caveatFierce neat. Genuinely needs water for most palates.
  • caveatSame medicinal core as the standard 10. Won't convert anyone who didn't already like Laphroaig.
  • caveatBatch variation is real. The batch you buy this year won't be identical to last year's.
BEHIND THE LABEL
  • flagBeam Suntory has periodically tweaked the batch ABV and the bottling format; the 'Cask Strength' designation covers a range of proofs across batches.
  • flagThe Quarter Cask, Lore, and Cairdeas line-extensions spread the brand's energy; the Cask Strength 10 is arguably the best Laphroaig under £70 but gets less marketing push than the newer SKUs.
